Anyone who has been watching the news has seen the dump of snow that Eastern Kansas/Western Missouri has been graced to get. They didn't plow the roads until the early afternoon, Park still has classes and I, against my better instincts, drove the 30 minutes to get to class. I got to school 20 minutes late for class, but I made it. Here's how:
I left home around 11:55 AM and got off post decently enough. The plows had made some progress on the snow and they had sanded so there was some traction. Things became adventurous once I hit 45 spur and 45 highway. No one had plowed. At all. In my little Ford Contour, I managed- with a lot of help from the second gear on the automatic transmission- to drive through at least four inches of snow without skidding too much or ending up in a ditch. I made it all the way to Parkville when I got stuck behind a long line of vehicles. On a hill. A man in a red van started backing up down the hill. He stopped by my car and I rolled down my window to ask what was going on. Apparently, a truck got stuck in the snow and couldn't be budged. He was going to take 152 Highway and get on Barry Road. I told him I had no idea where that was so he said I could follow him. There was enough space for me to safely execute a 3 point turn around (which I excel at doing) and go back the way I came. I drove down the unplowed K highway to the equally unplowed 152 and exited over to the semi-plowed I-29 and managed to get to the other side of 45 highway which had been plowed. Once I got back on 45, getting to school was a piece of cake.
After all of that, I got to school and found no one. Classes had been cancelled since 11 AM and I didn't get the email. The radio didn't say anything. I was pissed. I walked down to the Student Center, checked my email and was on my way into McKay when Bruce pulled up. He was going to meet people since he had a half-day of work. He avoided 45 all together. But, he followed me home on the now semi-plowed 45 and back onto post.
After a snowball fight which he started by trying to get me to shovel the walk, we went to Applebees for a late lunch and then back to my place. He beat me thoroughly in Trivial Pursuit, stayed for dinner and went home.
Before dinner... Bruce and I were helping Mom in the kitchen. Mom is in the dining room and I'm emptying the dishwasher. Bruce makes a smart remark in my direction and Mom pipes up "That's why you're dating her, right?" Both of us were floored. I remember looking over at him and seeing this huge grin warring with the look of shock. He says I was just smiling. I had several smart remarks in mind but none of them made it past my tongue. We finished what we were doing and made it up the stairs, shaking. I guess we're dating. We haven't quite figured out what we're doing.
He on his way to San Diego for two weeks. After that, I'm moving out and he's moving away. *sigh*
The moral of the story: Park and snow suck. But my classes were cancelled by my teachers today so I guess it evens out. Somewhat.
