A smoking crater (double post)
Jan. 18th, 2005 12:17 pmThat is all that is going to be left of Rob's house once Bruce reads the email he sent me...
There has to be a little bit of reflection here so bear with me. I promise I will return to the idea of a smoking hole.
Bruce and I have faced a lot of difficulties with our relationship. Many of our friends did not like the idea of he and I dating, citing the age difference (8.5 years), maturity differences and the like. Not to mention that he and I started dating about two weeks after I broke it off with Derek and Derek became friends with Bruce's friends through a mutual roleplaying game. Bruce hates being told what's good for him, especially after he's made a decision. He's not nearly as impulsive as I am when it comes to relationships; he thought long and hard about whether or not to date me. As a result, he's very protective of me and the relationship. He was on hand as an impartial observer (neither one of us liked the other very much when we first met) as Derek and I started to crumble. He saw how I handled it and he saw what happened to me.
Now, Bruce knows that I am a flirt and that people respond to that. He knows that, he accepts that. He also knows that I handle situations regarding flirting differently than he would like. As I said above, he is incredibly protective of me and the concept of "Bruce and Stephanie". If someone, be it through action or words, tries to come between the concept and the reality, the gloves come off. Bruce is a Southern gentleman and a former diplomat. I've said it before. Unlike many others who try to wear the title of "Southern gentleman" (like Rob, see how this comes together?), he takes it seriously. He will go to all lengths to protect not only MY honor but his as well.
I met Rob out at NERO. Rob and I hit it off because Rob also speaks French. Rob likes to say inappropriate things to me because he finds me very attractive. Bruce trusts Rob about as far as I can throw him. Not as far as Bruce can throw Rob (because Bruce used to play baseball and has scary range and strength) but as far as I can throw Rob. This jerk keeps flattering me, paying me compliments in French and just continually goes over Bruce's comfort level. I've just been brushing it off with the rationale being that I will pay them as much attention as I think they're worth: none. Bruce does not like that, deeming it too passive. Well, Rob has even stepped over MY line.
"Je t'adore toujours, joliefemme taré." [sic]
I adore you forever, pretty nerdy girl.
I adore you forever... he's got a girlfriend and Bruce plays NERO with us. I sent him a response telling him that was inappropriate and that Bruce will not like it when he hears about it. Thus, I return to the smoking crater.
This will not just be limited to Bruce, Rob, Laney (Rob's lovely and intelligent girlfriend) and myself... oh no. Bruce and his friends personify the ideals to which the mediaeval knights just paid lip service. Bruce's friends love me not just for my sake but because I am the beloved of their friend. They have been briefed. I fully expect to get a call this afternoon and to hear the explosion in Lawrence all the way in Parkville.
And now we come to the moral of this story: Do NOT attempt to come between anything Bruce loves and himself. Poor Rob won't know what hit him...
UPDATE: Everything is okay now... this resulted from Rob using the wrong level of "like" and a misunderstanding of what Bruce expected of me. I wrote an apology to Rob, Bruce wrote to Rob and I understand he meant to say (platonic like) I like you, you beautiful nerdy girl... I hope he accepts my apology.
